Locative posters for situated information
A unified approach to locative media
It is commonplace to say that, nowadays, any information we may need is just a click away. Still, the huge availability of online information data does not necessarily mean we can always get the right information, at the right time. The information that is the most relevant is probably somewhere on the web, and yet there seems to be no generic and scalable approach to explicitly make such digital content readily available where it is most needed. Existing alternatives, e.g. location-based applications, public displays or augmented reality, are all based on custom solutions and closed system designs, which undermine their widespread adoption. A fundamental breakthrough would have to enable a massive jump in scale and embeddedness, offering simple solutions to the problems of fine-grained spatial integration, support for extreme display densities, and systematic interaction.
This project explores the concept of locative posters as a unified model for open locative media experiences spanning across multiple locative channels, such as mobile application, public displays or augmented reality. This should offer an alternative path for the large scale placement of situated information in urban environments.
